Why do I love these sugar cookies?
- Every year, I come back to these Valentine cookies. They’re soft, buttery, and melt-in-your-mouth treats. You know what? They’re like a blank canvas that is ready to be shaped, decorated, and turned into something unique.
- Not every dessert gets better with time, but these cookies do. Letting the sit overnight allows the flavor to meld and makes it even more delicious on the next day. So, these are the best part of the Valentine cookies.
- I love the process of decorating these cookies. It’s fun and creative; whether it’s piping delicate designs, adding sprinkles, or spreading buttercream frosting, every cookie becomes its own masterpiece. You can use buttercream frosting as well, but personally I like royal icing.
Ingredients you’ll need for Valentine cookies:
- All-purpose flour: The foundation of our love story. So, this is perfect for all sugar cookies because it balances the softness and structure you need for your Valentine cookies. But you can experiment with Bob’s Red Mill flour for a gluten-free version or pastry flour, even oat flour. The taste and texture will be slightly different but worth it.
- Unsalted butter: Everyone knows unsalted ones give better control over the flavors, and you can add the right amount of salt to your cookies. Applesauce is the healthier option if you want to omit the butter. Use 1/2 cup for every cup of butter.
- Powdered Sugar: It easily blends with your butter to form extra smooth dough and give you perfect tender cookies instead of a crunchy one. Want a slightly caramel flavor? Go with brown sugar. I guarantee that you loved it.
- Vanilla extract: A dash of romance!! Your baking goods are incomplete without the extract. It makes a huge difference in your Valentine cookies by adding the depth and rich aroma. Because of which you will run to eat cookies. Try to be experimental, guys! Use almond extract or cinnamon and nutmeg for a unique twist.
- Egg yolks: To bring everything together, just like love does!! For a buttery texture and binding, I’m using one large egg yolk. You can use mashed banana, unsweetened applesauce, or even Greek yogurt as well. But yeah! Used 1 tablespoon per yolk only.
- Meringue Powder: Stop using egg whites! I want pretty, pretty cookies, so I’m using this powder to give royal icing, which is a smooth and glossy texture. I personally prefer this. And the most important thing is, it is easy to make as well as has a longer shelf life, so you can make it ahead and store it for months without losing their icing.

How to make:
- Preheat your oven: Preheat your oven at 350°F for 8 to 10 minutes. To maintain the shape of your cookies and help to bake evenly.
- Dry Ingredients: Whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. This is the foundation of your cookies.

- Wet Ingredients: In a large bowl of stand mixer, beat the softened butter and sugar until it becomes light and fluffy. You can use an electric mixer as well. Mix the egg yolk, vanilla extract, and a hint of almond extract for extra flavor. It’s not compulsory, but I’ve used it. No more rules to be followed for an extra touch.
- Combine the dry and wet ingredients: Gradually add these dry ingredients into wet ingredients and mix until it forms a dough. Once the dough is ready, just wrap it in plastic and let it chill for at least an hour or up to 24 hours if possible.
- Roll the dough and shape your cookies: Now, lightly flour the surface and roll your chilled dough to about 1/4 inch thick, and cut your cookies with a cookie cutter. Last time I ordered this heart cookie cutter set from Amazon, and it’ll help me to cut varieties of cookies. Trust me, guys, this is a super easy and helpful cutter.

- Bake and cool: Place your pretty, pretty cookies on a baking sheet and bake for 8-10 minutes. Yeah!! Right, only 8 to 10 minutes are enough to bake these cookies until the edges are slightly golden. Let them cool for 5 minutes and transfer to a wire rack.
- Royal icing: This is one of favourite favorite parts. You can design whatever you want! So first, whisk the powdered sugar and meringue powder in a bowl, then add vanilla extract and gradually add the water until the consistency of the mixture becomes thick but pipeable. For a variety of colors, divide the icing into bowls and add the food colors.

It’s not ideal to refrigerate the Valentine cookies; they can dry out easily, so freezing is the best option. Let them cool completely and store in a sealed container. When you are ready to serve, thaw them at room temperature for at least 15-20 minutes or warm them in the oven.
3) Store iced and decorated cookies: It is better to store baked cookies, but iced ones, but if you have the courage to freeze iced ones, then let the icing completely dry and layer them with parchment paper in an airtight container.
